What is Diabetes & Prediabetes? Diabetes in UAE: Diagnosis & Tests for better understanding
Diabetes Diagnosis & What is Prediabetes?
Diabetes can be diagnosed in various ways, but if results come positive the test is usually repeated once more. Based on your blood glucose levels you can be classified under 3 groups
Diabetes: Requires medication and lifestyle modification (diet & exercise)
Prediabetes: Only lifestyle modification is required.
Non-Diabetic: No intervention is needed.
Blood test should always be done in a healthcare facility to make the diagnosis of diabetes. Based on your reports doctor may ask for you to go for some other tests.
HbA1C (glycosylated hemoglobin) gives an average blood sugar level in past 2-3 months. The good thing about this test is fasting is not required and since it’s an average it’s not effected much by 3-4 days of impaired blood sugar.
If HbA1C is greater than or equal to 6.5% diabetes is formally diagnosed.
less than 5.7%
5.7% to 6.4%
6.5% or higher
Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)
You have to visit your lab or doctor in fasting (not less than 8 hours and not more than 12 hours), except for water.
Diabetes is diagnosed at fasting blood glucose of greater than or equal to 126 mg/dl
Fasting Blood Sugar(FBS)
less than 100 mg/dl
100 mg/dl to 125 mg/dl
126 mg/dl or higher
Random Blood Sugar
This test is performed if doctor has to rule out diabetes as cause of your symptoms and can be done at any time of the day.
Diabetes is diagnosed at blood glucose of greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl
What is Prediabetes?
People usually almost have prediabetes before developing type 2 diabetes where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Classification of prediabetes has been introduced recently to alert individuals and healthcare workers so that they can take positive action in terms of diet and physical activity. Earlier they were classified as non-diabetic.
The prediabetes puts people in developing full blown diabetes and some heart related problem later in life. Corrective measures can delay the onset.
Prediabetes is usually diagnosed accidentally while screening or during routine blood examination. Most of the time no symptoms are present. As soon so symptoms of high blood sugar starts to appear most of the time sugar level are high enough to make the formal diagnosis of diabetes.
With blood glucose in prediabetes range it is recommended to do following tests at least once every year
Fasting Blood Sugar
HbA1C of 5.7%-6.4%
Fasting blood sugar of 100 – 125 mg/dl
Delaying / Preventing Type 2 Diabetes
Once diagnosed of prediabetes life style modification is advised. You do not medication. For some people early intervention can return the blood sugar levels back to normal and for some other people development of type 2 diabetes can be delayed.
Recent research shows that risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be decreased by almost 60% by following methods
Reducing weight by 7%
Moderate exercise, like 30 minutes of brisk walking (5 times a week)
